Can Stress Be Positive?

Changing The Stress Mindset

Researcher Alia Crum set out to challenge the notion that stress is always harmful. In her experiment, employees at a financial institution were split into two groups. One group watched videos depicting stress as harmful, while another group saw stress as enhancing.  After just one week, those who embraced stress as enhancing reported better mental health and work performance. The mindset regarding stress can effect response to stress.

It appears there are future benefits to having a stress is beneficial mindset.  In a follow-up study, participants with a stress-is-enhancing mindset:

  • Were more comfortable during a public speaking task.
  • They had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
  • They had increased openness to feedback.

Reframing stress as beneficial can result in positive outcomes.  Positive effects could be better hormonal responses to stress, improved mood, and enhanced work performance.  Hypnosis, and self hypnosis, can assist in improving a positive mindset.
