In her TED Talk, Susan Pinker considers Julianne Holt-Lunstad’s research on longevity. Julianne Holt-Lunstad emphasizes the benefits of social connections. Her research has shown social interactions make life more enjoyable and a key to a longer and healthier life.
There is significant evidence that having strong connections with friends, family, and community can be just as important, and possibly more important, than diet and exercise. Ms. Holt-Lunstad emphasizes the importance of quality over quantity in our social interactions. It’s not just about being surrounded by people; it’s about feeling truly connected. Two important elements are:
Close Relationships: This could be family and friends you can rely on. Someone who will listen to you and come to your aid when needed.
Social Integration: This is as simple as interacting with those you come in contact with. Casual encounters with neighbors, the cashier at the grocery store or the local coffee shop. These additional casual social connections seem to aid in longevity.
Ms. Pinker’s TED Talk includes a graphic on how certain conditions effect longevity.

Social connection seems to be a very significant component of longevity and, perhaps, better psychological security.
