This study examined how effective hypnosis is in treating depression symptoms. The researchers analyzed different studies that compared hypnosis to other treatments or no treatment at all. They found 10 studies with a total of 13 trials that met their criteria.
The results showed that after receiving hypnosis, participants experienced a significant reduction in their depression symptoms. On average, those who underwent hypnosis showed more improvement compared to about 76% of people in the control group.
The researchers also looked at the long-term effects of hypnosis and found that even after some time had passed, participants who received hypnosis still showed improvement in their depression symptoms. On average, they were better off than about 51% of people in the control group.
These results are similar to the improvements seen with other well-known psychological treatments for depression, such as cognitive therapy and interpersonal therapy. This suggests that hypnosis is a very effective way of alleviating depression symptoms. Clinicians should seriously consider hypnosis as a treatment option when working with clients or patients who are depressed.
