Hypnosis is a technique that involves guiding an individual into a deeply relaxed and focused state. This state of heightened objectivity allows the individual to access their subconscious mind and make positive changes.
Peripheral Mechanisms
- Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS): Hypnosis helps reduce the activity of the SNS, which is responsible for the “fight-or-flight” response. Lowering SNS activity means the body is less likely to be in a constant state of stress or alertness1.
- Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS): At the same time, hypnosis enhances the activity of the PNS, which promotes relaxation, recovery, and overall well-being1.
Psychophysiological Measures
- Heart Rate Variability (HRV): HRV is a measure of the variation in time between each heartbeat. Higher HRV indicates better autonomic regulation and is associated with increased parasympathetic activity1.
- Electrodermal Activity (EDA): EDA measures the skin’s electrical conductance, which changes with sweat gland activity. Lower EDA during hypnosis indicates reduced sympathetic arousal1.
- Respiratory Rate (RR): A slower respiratory rate during hypnosis reflects enhanced parasympathetic activity and relaxation1.
Outcomes
By balancing the ANS, hypnosis can optimize outcomes for individuals with psychosomatic disorders, chronic pain, anxiety, and other conditions associated with ANS dysfunction1. The ability to reduce psychophysiological arousal and promote relaxation makes hypnosis a valuable tool for improving mental and physical outcomes.
Hypnosis affects the ANS by lowering sympathetic activity and enhancing parasympathetic tone, leading to a balanced autonomic nervous system. This balance contributes to reduced stress, improved relaxation, and overall well-being.
