3 Quick Relaxation Techniques
Here are 3 quick techniques that can be used to produce a relaxed state and interrupt feelings of stress. Consider any of these techniques individually or in combination and use those techniques that work for you.
Box Breathing
This method was popularized by Mark Divine in his book The Way Of The Seal. The method is simple:
- Breath in for a 5 count.
- Hold for a 5 count.
- Exhale for a 5 count.
- Hold for a 5 count.
- Then, of course, begin the cycle again by breathing in.
There is a YouTube video of Mr. Divine demonstrating Box Breathing and “Tactical Breathing.”
Bilateral Exercise
Passing an object across the center of the body activates both sides of the brain. This tends to calm the mind.
Begin by holding a ball, or similar small object, in one hand. Simply pass the object back and forth, in front of the body, between hands in a rhythmic motion. While passing the object, allow the hand to move just past the center of the body. The activity can be measured in number of motions or by elapsed time.
Expanded Field of Vision
This is a simple technique that could be used anywhere. Begin by focusing on a point directly ahead. Then begin to expand your field of vison while still focusing on the point ahead. Become more aware of what is to the left and the right. Become more aware of what is above and below. Notice how far you can actually see while looking forward. Focus for 30 seconds.
