The Magic of Converting Hard Triggers to Soft Prompts

You’ve probably heard the phrase “I was triggered.” It’s a common way to describe a strong emotional reaction — but have you ever stopped to think about that word? A trigger is associated with firearms. Once the trigger is pulled, the resulting action can’t be undone. However, people have the ability to decide how they react in given situations.  Instead of “trigger,” perhaps think in terms of a cue, prompt, or stimulus. These words describe something that catches our attention — but they don’t suggest we’ve lost control. This small language shift helps us see that we can notice a cue and respond in a new way.

Modern psychology supports this idea. Research on emotion shows that what matters most isn’t the event itself, but how we appraise it — the meaning we give it. That’s why two people can experience the same situation and feel entirely different emotions. When we change the way we label an experience, we begin to change the body’s response to it. Over time, this reduces emotional and physical stress and builds resilience.

In my work at Rogers Hypnosis, I assist clients to work with cues instead of triggers. Through hypnosis and simple relaxation techniques, clients learn to slow down reactions, create space, and make new choices. The goal isn’t to deny discomfort — it’s to reclaim control. Because when you stop seeing yourself as “triggered,” you start remembering that you have the power to respond differently.

Choose. Decide what response supports you best — calm, kindness, or stepping away. Pause. When you notice a strong reaction, take a slow breath Name it. Say to yourself, “This is a cue, not a trigger.” Observe. Where do you feel it in your body? What might it be telling you?
