One of the most common myths about hypnosis is the idea that someone could “get stuck” in a hypnotic state. From a hypnotist’s perspective, this is a curious notion — because if anything, the opposite is more likely: we’re far more often stuck awake than we are ever stuck in trance.
Let’s take a moment to explore what’s really happening in the brain during hypnosis.
Understanding the Four States of Consciousness
While most people are familiar with the two extremes of consciousness — awake and asleep — the human mind actually flows through a spectrum of brainwave states throughout the day. These include:
- Beta: This is your normal waking consciousness — alert, logical, and focused on the outside world. It’s associated with active thinking, problem-solving, and often, stress.
- Alpha: A more relaxed state often experienced during light meditation or while daydreaming. It’s a bridge between Beta and deeper states.
- Theta: This is the hypnotic sweet spot — a state of deep relaxation paired with heightened focus and internal awareness. It’s where creativity, emotional integration, and transformation happen.
- Delta: The slowest brainwave state, representing deep, dreamless sleep. This is true unconsciousness.
We naturally pass through the Theta state twice every day — once when falling asleep and again when waking up. Most people slide through it so quickly they barely notice it, but with hypnosis, we intentionally guide the mind to stay in Theta for longer. It’s a state of deep conscious relaxation, not unconsciousness.
So, What If You “Got Stuck”?
Let’s imagine someone in a hypnotic trance — calm, relaxed, in that Theta zone — and the hypnotist suddenly left the room. What would happen?
Quite simply, one of two things:
- The person might drift gently into sleep (Delta), or
- They’d naturally return to normal waking consciousness (Beta).
That’s it. The trance state is fluid, not fixed. Just as you don’t get “stuck” in a daydream or while meditating, you won’t get stuck in hypnosis. In fact, clients often report feeling more refreshed, clear-headed, and centered after a session — as if their mind had been given a chance to exhale.
The Real Concern: Getting Stuck Awake
Ironically, what people truly do get stuck in is the Beta state — especially at night, when they want nothing more than to fall asleep. This overactive, overstimulated mind is the culprit behind insomnia, stress, and restlessness.
That’s where my Calm Conditioning method comes in. This process helps clients retrain the nervous system, guiding the brain gently and reliably into the more restorative Alpha and Theta states. With consistent practice, you learn not just how to relax — but how to regulate your own mind, stay present, and even fall asleep with greater ease.
Imagine becoming the director of your own experience — knowing how to activate calm, focus your thoughts, and shift gears when you need to. That’s the power of understanding your own consciousness.
