When working with challenging people, engaging in conflict often increases tensions. The BIFF Method, created by Bill Eddy, offers a way to communicate to keep things calm and prevents escalation. Here’s how you can use it to stay in control:
Brief: Keep responses short and to the point. Avoid unnecessary details that could open doors for more conflict. Brief responses also reduce the chance to twist your words.
Example: Instead of a lengthy explanation, simply say, “I prefer to keep our conversations constructive.”
Informative: Stay factual and avoid emotional language. Provide only relevant information without defending or justifying yourself.
Example: “The project is due Friday, and I’ll complete my part by then.” This addresses the issue directly without adding fuel.
Friendly: Surprise them with a calm, friendly tone. Avoid hostility, as it’s often what the person expects and uses to keep conflict going.
Example: “Thank you for sharing your thoughts.” This can help disarm potential tension and keep the conversation neutral.
Firm: End with a decisive note to signal that the conversation is over. This reinforces your boundaries and prevents ongoing back-and-forth.
Example: “This is my decision, and I’m not open to further discussion.”
The BIFF Method protects your energy and keeps conversations focused and respectful. One can maintain control in challenging interactions without getting pulled into unnecessary agitation. The BIFF is a simple way to keep control and set clear boundaries. Using relaxation techniques, like self-hypnosis, can create that sense of calm to maintain control with challenging situations.
