Redefining The Concept of “Suggestibility”

“Heightened suggestibility” is typically included in defining the process of hypnosis. This is mentioned while suggesting hypnosis isn’t a form of mind control.  However, implying increased suggestibility almost sounds like the client experiencing hypnosis doesn’t control their mind.  It appear they are more open to suggestions (desired or undesired) of the hypnotist.  This could prevent a potential client from pursuing hypnosis due to a fear of being presented, and accepting, unwanted suggestions.  This would seem to be a reasonable client concern.

Actual hypnotists know this is not the case.  If a hypnotist suggested the client rob a bank, and return with the money, that suggestion would be denied.  The client will not blindly accept, but consider, suggestions related to their desired objective.  The client may accept a suggestion, alter the suggestion, or conceive of a different concept that relates to their objective.  These options could be considered based on the hypnotist’s suggestions.

With this in mind, “heighten suggestibilty” might be redefined as increased objectivity tempered by the client’s experiential preferences.  Hypnosis creates an objectivity allowing the client to consider a suggestion and a subjectivity based on the client’s personal experiences. This seems consistent with the concept the client relaxes the conscious mind and allows the subconscious mind to consider suggestions.  The subconscious mind exists to protect the client and is unlikely to accept a suggestion that is contrary to the client’s objective or ethics.

The concept of objective/subjective client control seems a more appropriate description than heightened suggestibility.  The client is more open to suggestions but is still very much in control of accepting, modifying, and rejecting the hypnotist’s suggestions.
