The Power of a Simple Word: Rethinking “Why”

In my work with clients, I often remind them that the words we use—especially the ones we say to ourselves—carry more weight than we realize. Language can soften, or sharpen, an experience, open up curiosity, or shut it down.  This post offers a simple way to think about everyday language, especially the kinds of questions we ask. It’s a small shift that can make big changes in how we relate to others—and ourselves.

Language is important in my hypnosis business and sometimes, the smallest shifts in wording can lead to big changes in how we feel, respond, and connect.

Let’s take a look at a single word: “why.”
Depending on the context, this little word can either create connection—or cause tension.

Consider the difference between these two statements:

  • “Why did you do that?”
  • “Let me explain why I volunteered.”

The first feels like an accusation. It can prompt defensiveness, even if the intent wasn’t negative. The second, on the other hand, feels inviting—it opens the door to understanding and shared meaning.  This is why I often encourage clients (and myself) to use “why” for positive or reflective situations, and to use “what” or “how” when exploring something more challenging or emotionally charged.

So instead of asking:

  • “Why did you do that?”
    Consider:
  • “What led you to that choice?”
  • “How did you decide that was the right move?”

These questions soften the tone, reduce tension, and promote openness—whether you’re speaking to someone else or reflecting inward.

Words matter. And when we choose them with intention, we create more space for clarity, connection, and real change.
