The terms “perception” and “perspective” are frequently used interchangeably. Andrew Bustamante, a former intelligence officer, shares his definitions of these concepts.
Perception: The Personal Lens
Perception is the individual interpretation of sensory information. It’s the lens through which we view the world based on our experiences and beliefs. Perception is inherently subjective. The perception is whether the glass is seen as half full or half empty.
Perspective: The Art of Stepping Outside Ourselves
Perspective involves observing outside our experiences and considering the other person’s experiences. It requires empathy and an open mind by considering facts and observations of the current situation. Perspective can assist in various ways:
- Problem-Solving: Perspective allows us to see solutions beyond our immediate viewpoint.
- Empathy: By understanding others’ perspectives, we build stronger connections and foster compassion.
- Predictive Power: Perspective helps us anticipate behaviors and outcomes.
- Active listening enhances communication.
Mr. Bustamante also emphasizes curiosity before judgment. Cultivate curiosity about others’ experiences, motivations, and challenges. Developing a practice of inner calm, through self-hypnosis, could aid in gaining perspective.
