Is “Trust Your Gut” A Real Thing?

The Second Brain: Why The Gut Has a Mind of Its Own

Have you ever had a “gut feeling” about something — and later realized you were right? Or felt a nervous flutter in your stomach before making a big decision? These sensations aren’t just poetic expressions. They are real biological signals coming from a powerful system within you: the Enteric Nervous System.

Often called the “second brain,” this complex network of neurons resides in the gut and plays a crucial role in emotional health, immunity, and even decision-making. Let’s explore what the enteric nervous system is and why it deserves more credit than we typically give it.

What Is the Enteric Nervous System?

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is a vast, self-contained network of around 100 million nerve cells embedded in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract — from the esophagus all the way to the colon. That’s more neurons than in the spinal cord!

Although the ENS communicates closely with the brain via the vagus nerve, it can also function independently. It controls digestion, blood flow, and immune responses in the gut without needing input from the brain: the gut can think for itself.

The Gut-Brain Connection

The gut and brain are in constant communication through a two-way street called the gut-brain axis. This pathway uses:

  • Neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine
  • Hormones, like cortisol and ghrelin (hunger hormone)
  • Immune system signals
  • The Vagus Nerve, the superhighway connecting your gut and brain

In fact, up to 90% of the body’s serotonin — the “feel-good” neurotransmitter — is produced in the gut. Imbalances in gut health can lead to symptoms of anxiety, depression, brain fog, and low energy.  When your gut is healthy and calm, your mind tends to follow suit. When it’s irritated or inflamed, emotional distress can more easily rise.

Why It’s Called the “Second Brain”

While the ENS doesn’t “think” in the way the brain does (no planning or abstract thought), it does:

  • Process sensory information from the gut
  • Make decisions about how to respond (e.g., speed up or slow digestion)
  • Send real-time feedback to the central nervous system

This is why scientists call it the “second brain.” It operates with a surprising level of autonomy and complexity, coordinating millions of micro-decisions a day that affect how you feel — emotionally and physically.

Gut Feelings & Intuition: Not Just Metaphor

Have you ever felt a “knot in your stomach” when something felt off? Or a peaceful, warm feeling in your gut when something felt just right?  These sensations are often messages from the enteric nervous system. While not conscious thoughts, gut feelings are a form of embodied intelligence — the body’s way of rapidly processing information, based on past experiences, sensory cues, and subtle environmental changes.  Intuition isn’t mystical. It’s more biological.

Health Benefits of a Happy Gut

When the enteric nervous system is functioning well, you may notice:

✅ Improved mood and emotional resilience
✅ More regular and comfortable digestion
✅ Better immune function
✅ Clearer thinking and decision-making
✅ A stronger connection to your own body and intuition

Supporting your ENS can be as simple as:

  • Eating a fiber-rich, whole-foods diet
  • Reducing processed food and sugar
  • Managing stress through hypnosis, breathwork or movement
  • Getting adequate sleep
  • Listening to your body’s cues

The next time you “go with your gut,” know that you’re tapping into something connected to wellbeing and happiness. The enteric nervous system is not just a collection of nerve endings — it’s a second brain with its own kind of wisdom.
