Psychologist Jennice Vilhauer, Ph.D., has dedicated her work to helping people reshape their lives by changing something surprisingly powerful: their expectations. In her engaging TED Talk, “Why You Don’t Get What You Want; It’s Not What You Think,” she offers a practical approach to reversing self-defeating patterns and building a future rooted in possibility.
Dr. Vilhauer begins with a clear definition:
“An expectation is a belief about whether or not you’re going to get what you want. Expectation plus action equals the creation of your life experiences.”
In other words, what you believe will happen—combined with how you behave—sets the stage for what does happen. This is a modern take on the classic “self-fulfilling prophecy,” a concept well-known in psychology. The brain, always anticipating outcomes, tends to steer us in the direction of our most deeply held beliefs—even when those beliefs are limiting or outdated.
The good news? You can consciously shift this process. Dr. Vilhauer offers a deceptively simple but transformative method built around three reflective questions:
1. “How is what I’m expecting making me feel?”
Our emotions are often subtle messengers, offering clues about what we believe will unfold. If your expectations feel hopeful or empowering, keep going. But if you’re feeling anxious, defeated, or discouraged, it’s time to pause and reevaluate.
2. “What would I like to have happen instead?”
This question invites clarity. Rather than dwelling on what you’re afraid might happen, turn your attention to what you actually want. Often, we’re so focused on avoiding disappointment that we forget to visualize success. Shifting focus from fear to desire gives your brain a target worth aiming at.
3. “What do I need to do to make what I want happen?”
Here’s where transformation takes root. Once you’ve identified what you want, action is the bridge between intention and outcome. While it’s common for the mind to ruminate on past failures or worst-case scenarios, mapping out clear, realistic steps toward your goal activates the brain’s planning and motivation systems. This is the tipping point—where belief meets behavior.
Dr. Vilhauer emphasizes that the past is not destiny. Circumstances change. People grow. Just because something didn’t work out once—or even many times—doesn’t mean it can’t work out now or in the future. By shifting expectations and taking meaningful action, new outcomes become not only possible, but probable.
