Barbara Sher: Community is The Dream Builder

Barbara Sher has a unique concept of creating a group of people she calls a Dream Team.  The objective of the team is to assist group members to acquire particular desired dreams.  The dreams could be a one-time event like a vacation or as significant as a career.

There are two main components the individual needs to share with the group: the dream and the obstacle.  Or, in plain terms, what they want and why they can’t have it.  The obstacle is a necessary component as it causes the group to think of ways of assisting the person to obtain their dream.  The collaboration of the group reveals how the connections, and resources, of any one individual could be used to assist the “dreamer.”  It also reveals how many resources we have, that we don’t consider, until someone else suggests a need for those resources.  The challenge of the obstacle encourages people to think about the resources they have and could share.  The statement of “I can’t do this because…” brings out the desire for people to be helpful.

Ms. Sher states the “dream killer” is isolation and the group effort overcomes that isolation. Ms. Sher also states that one should not be certain of what the obstacle is.  Don’t be “certain” that lack of money, education, or circumstance are absolute ends to a dream.  There may be variations that are unknown until someone in the group considers, and shares, their resources.

A Dream Team could be as few as 6 people.  Larger teams could expand the possible resources of the team.  With the possibilities for the internet, fairly larger teams could be initiated.  And, with that, fairly large dreams could be accomplished.

More Details on Dream Teams

  1. Shared Goals: Dream Team members share similar dreams or goals. Whether it’s writing a book, starting a business, or learning a new skill, they’re in it together.
  2. Weekly Meetings: Dream Teams meet weekly for eight consecutive weeks. During these gatherings, they brainstorm solutions, provide emotional support, and keep each other accountable.
  3. Designing Action Plans: The magic lies in practical action. Dream Teams help you figure out what you truly want and create a step-by-step plan to achieve it.

Why Dream Teams Succeed

Dreams need more than desire—they need friends! Here’s why Dream Teams work:

  • Persistence: Dreams require sustained effort. When obstacles arise (like unexpected bills or self-doubt), your team keeps you going.
  • Brainstorming Solutions: Got a problem? Your team will brainstorm creative solutions. Need a contact? They’ll introduce you.
  • Companionship: Just like school assignments, Dream Teams provide companionship and encouragement. It’s the ongoing help that makes dreams a reality.
